Home Decorating - Your Front Entrance

What does your front entry way say about your home? Walking in your front door you are greeted by...clutter? Piles of shoes? Bags of garbage? If I've just described your front entrance, you are among the many in desperate need of an entryway makeover. Remember, first impressions are important. Your home should immediately welcome you in and create an aura of calm and peace within. If the first thing that you and your guests see is mess, you won't have good feelings when walking into your home. There are a number of small improvements you can do today to increase the warmth and coziness of your entryway.

There is absolutely nothing more detrimental to your front entrance than clutter, and the good news is that there are some quick and easy solutions to clutter problems. If your entryway is very small, consider organizing your closet to its maximum effectiveness. Do not rely on the pre-installed shoe organizer or simply place your shoes on the floor of your closet. Install a versatile shoe rack that will hold up to 30 pairs of shoes. Purchase some dual hangers that will hang two jackets on one, and find a long hanging organizer that you can stuff with mittens, scarves, or smaller items. If you have children, install wall hooks inside the closet for their backpacks, and get them in the habit of hanging their bags up when they come home from school.

Once your closet is organized, take a look at the surrounding area. If your home has a long hallway leading to other areas from your front entrance, you should consider purchasing two area rugs: a runner length area rug for the hallway and a smaller area rug for the front entrance. If your walls are a taupe, light brown, or blue, try a chocolate brown area rug with an interesting pattern. The contrast will be stunning.

If you have enough space, a small table with a flat back that fits securely against the wall is a great investment. You can place a vase of fresh flowers, a small lamp, and a few treasures on the table. Nothing says welcome home more than the soft glow of a lamp in your window.

Antique finials on your walls are an excellent way to hang up jackets, hats, keys, and when they aren't serving their purpose, look great on your walls coupled with a large mirror. Mirrors are a great way to take a last peek at yourself or adjust your lipstick before leaving for the day. You can purchase them in a variety of styles and colors, and nothing looks more beautiful in a front foyer than an antique mirror.

A fantastic finishing touch for your front entry is a chandelier. Avoid the overly ornate and stick with a fixture that is wrought iron or brass. Chandeliers create an aura of luxury, and when you open your door you will be instantly enveloped in feelings of opulence.

Entryways should say, "Welcome home, I'm so glad to see you." Put your home's best foot forward by re-creating your front entrance today.

Fran loves to home decorate and loves to share her decorating tips. Her most popular tip for the entryway is to lay down area rugs. She suggests you check out the brown area rugs from http://www.HouseOfAreaRugs.com for a homely appeal to your entry.
