These days life can be so busy
that there is no time to think about career change, never mind
work out how to go about it. You rush to work in the morning,
perhaps having to organize the rest of the family before you
leave. Then you spend all day behind a computer, in front of a
class, behind a counter, dashing around a hospital ward or
whatever your job involves.
Then it's back on the bus or train
for the commute home, stopping off to get some groceries,
cooking for yourself or a family, cleaning up, getting your
clothes ready for the next day, collapsing in front of the TV
for half an hour and then to bed. Only to get up next day and go
through the same thing all over again.
Sounds familiar?
If so, here is a list of steps
you can take to find time to plan a career change.
Step #1
Take a lunch break - many
people work through lunch, but you are legally entitled to a
break and should take at least half an hour. Instead of sitting
around complaining with other members of staff, use the time to
think about what you want, daydream about a better life, read
about other jobs.
Step #2
Delegate some of the housework
to family members or housemates. Or if you live alone, do some
of the chores a little less often. After all, who will see the
place? As long as your mother isn't due to visit, you don't have
to keep a perfect house.
Step #3
Cut out the TV a couple of
evenings a week. There's nothing wrong with watching TV to chill
out after a long and exhausting day, but if you watch it to
much, it could be preventing you from making changes which will
improve your life.
Step # 4
Chill out-make time to relax a
little every day. Get up half an hour earlier to go for a walk
or meditate or start work earlier so that you can create some
free time in the evening.
3 Ways to Use the Time
1. The first way to use the
time you have made free is to daydream. You've probably heard
the saying that everything starts as an idea and most ideas come
from creative daydreaming. Most inventors or geniuses come up
with their best ideas when they are relaxed. So give yourself
half an hour or an hour in which to relax every day - go for a
walk, soak in the bath, listen to music or whatever relaxes you
most.
2. Have a brainstorming
session. Write down all the things you have ever considered as a
career or job, all the skills you like using and the ones you'd
like to learn
3. Do some research - you can
find out a huge amount of information about careers on the
internet, or you can go to the library, browse in a large
bookstore, buy specialist journals or talk to people doing the
jobs which interest you.
