Productivity Improvement for the
Disorganized
Firstly, ask yourself, "Why don't I
clean up my desk? "I don't have time; I'm too tired; I hate the thought
of it", are likely the three top answers. Look around you. Do you see
too many empty coffee cups, books or clothes? If so, you likely not only
feel out of control but also look disorderly. In a survey of executives,
90% would not promote a messy person.
A little disorganization during a
project is normal, but major disorganization can create brain fog.
Cleaning your work area has been shown to increase productivity by 20 -
40%.
Figure out what's eating into your
time. Is it technology, workplace stress? Are you spending too much time
on emails? Log your time for a couple of days and notice where your time
is going.
Ways to Enhance Organization Skills
a) All new behaviors start with a
thought, idea, or a picture in your mind. Imagine that you are
organized, calm and manage your time well. You have just set positive
thoughts into action.
b) Map out some time to remove all the
piles of paper on your desk and put them into boxes. Ah, you can breathe
again. Then work at 15 minute or half hour increments whenever you can
until the piles are sorted out. Be ruthless! Recognize what is junk.
c) Put books and papers away at the end
of the day or first thing in the morning. Leave what needs to be worked
on in a prominent place on your desk.
Organizing your work area not only will
help you feel more in control, but also will provide you with keys to
success. At least you'll feel a whole lot better! Practice the Chinese
system of placement, Feng Shui, which means harmony: "Everything has a
place." And when placed properly, being organized can bring harmony to
your life. The book How to Conquer Clutter by Stephanie Culp is
an excellent resource.
Be realistic. Take small steps toward
productivity improvement. Put organization activities into your life for
a happier, more productive and calmer you.
